“Kiera Wilmot made an honest mistake, but the police were trying to throw away her life with a felony. After the community stood up for the girl, the charges were dropped, and she was allowed to move on with her life. Well, her greatness is really starting to shine, as she was recently granted several extraordinary opportunities through scholarship offers she has received.
Dr. Christopher Emdin, a professor of education at Columbia University, says that the schools are now very similar to prisons in terms of how they are structured, and how the inhabitants are treated. Kiera overcame her situation, but there are thousands of kids across the country who aren’t so lucky. Maybe it’s time to attack the system that is attacking us.
Check this out from Gawker:
“Kiera Wilmot, the 16-year-old honor student expelled from her high school after she allegedly ignited a chemical explosion on school property, received a full scholarship to the U.S. Space Academy, courtesy of a NASA veteran who, as a teenager, was accused of starting a forest fire during a science experiment.”
The lessons here are simple: Black kids have potential, and we can’t allow this system to destroy them. Also, hard work always pays off, especially when it comes to education. Dr. Boyce Watkins and Minister Louis Farrakhan recently held a forum called “Wealth, Education, Family and Community: A New Paradigm for Black America.” In the forum, Dr. Watkins and Min. Farrakhan both agree that African Americans are going to have to think differently when it comes to deciding what it means for your kids to be educated.”
My coworker accidentally broke our mini fridge, so after we removed it, I put this note on the floor.
Derweze, also known as the door to hell, is a 70 meter wide hole in the middle of the Karakum desert in Turkmenistan. The hole was formed in 1971 when a team of soviet geologists had their drilling rig collapse when they hit a cavern filled with natural gas. In an attempt to avoid poisonous discharge, they decided to burn it off, thinking that the gas would be depleted in only a few days. Derweze is still burning today

Only a week and a half to go until my FIRST VISIT TO DISNEYLAND! *excited squeal*
Although I’ve been to Walt Disney World many times, I’ve never been to the land where it all began.
Big Thunder Mountain will be closed, but I think I’ll be able to get by with what’s left. :)
This is Jakey (Damian cosplayer) with his new friend Ethan at the San Jose Comicfest. Ethan is an extraordinarily artistic 8 year old with his own booth at the convention, whom Jakey consistently returned to during the day. When asked by Mick Gray (the inker for Batman and Robin), what his favorite part of the convention was, Jake told him it was meeting Ethan. At the end of the con, Ethan gifted the spider-man he had been working on all morning to Jakey and even signed his work. Ethan’s face when he handed the art to Jakey. My heart cannot take how adorable they are. Jacob is now practicing how to draw a robin, so he can have something to give Ethan tomorrow. <3
As a book, I love Ender’s Game to tiny pieces. It’s the anthem for the smart young outsider, and it’s a hell of an adventure story. I love it and I’m ashamed of how much I love it because it’s written by this man:
“Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage.” —Orson Scott Card
Orson Scott Card sits on the board of the National Organization for Marriage, attempting to ensure the second-class treatment of queer people and (impotently, but still) threatening to destroy the government over matters of simple equality. He is a frothing, virulent bigot.
Don’t pay to see his movie. Don’t let a cent of your money go to him or encourage the studio to make more films which make him more money to give to people who think pro-equality governments are their mortal enemy.Spreading the word, guys.
Signal boost in progress…
